Train Your Dog to Clean Up Their Toys

So in order to train this trick, your dog should already know how to “fetch” and preferably “drop it”.

  1. Set them up for success: You want a box that’s low enough that the dog can comfortably see over it and wide enough to accommodate their head and several toys. It’s easier if you practice with the same toy and keep the box in the same location at first. Trick or Treat Hop
  2. Build value around the box: If your dog already knows how to retrieve to hand, you can just put your hand over the box so the dog will drop the toy into the box and gradually move it away as they become more accustomed to dropping it in the box. Otherwise you can hold the toy directly over the box and then after your dog takes it, ask for a “drop it.” In both cases reward liberally and don’t worry if the toy doesn’t land precisely in the box to begin with. Remember to reward your dog at the “source” i.e. at the box.
  3.  Building distance: Once your dog is accustomed to dropping the toy in the box with reasonable fluency (say at least eight out of ten tries or so), you can start building distance. If you have a velcro dog like Mr. N, it’s easier to have them move away to get the toy and come back to you and the toy box than the other way around. So put the toy about a feet or so away from the box and ask them to pick it up and direct them towards the box. Pointing helps. Remember to keep rewarding them at the box after they’ve dropped it.Trick or Treat Hop
  4. Building fluency: Once they’ve gotten the hang of distance, you can mix in different toys and start pairing the action with a cue word like “clean up” or “put it away.”
  5. Success: Congratulations! Now you have a dog that can clean up their toys. It’s a popular party trick and people ask you to teach their dogs and their children!

If your dog is an overachiever like Mr. N, they might just climb in the toy box with their toy!

Now reward yourself with some nice wine/beer/chocolate/your vice of choice and reward your dog by entering our fantastic Halloween giveaway! We’ve teamed up with our blogger friends are also offering trick tutorials for the holiday as well as:

I’d love to teach my dog to clean up his toys….. I think he knows what he’s supposed to do but it’s more fun to exchange the toy for another!

I would like to teach my dog to sit. I know that seems simple, but we have 3 dogs and 1 can sit and shake, 1 can fetch and 1 doesn’t know how to do anything. I wish she would learn to sit

Fetching something, like the remote control, would be a fun thing to teach…and lazy going forward on my part. LOL!

I would love to teach my dogs this trick, but I’ll need to really work on Fetch first! Icy and Phoebe just don’t get the concept of retrieving something and bringing it back to me. I need to work on that one. Great contest.

Mr. N, you look so cozy in the box with your toys – good job taking it an extra step! 🙂 I trained Luke to do this but it took a few more steps since he didn’t know the other cues at the time. But we did it, and it was a lot of fun.

I desparately need to teach my dog this! He is smart cookie and knows all his toys by name. He will dig through his toy box to find the right one, but he leaves his toys all over the house. I want to teach him how to pick them up and put them back!

My dog is so smart but what she hasn’t been able to learn is not to jump on people and get so out of control excitable when she sees them. This wouldn’t be a trick I suppose but it sure would be great for her to accomplish this. 🙂

Not a trick so much as getting her to not run. She’s a shelter dog and people had a hard time keeping her. Her age was estimated at two years. We have now had her for over 3 years. We adore her but she will still run if she gets loose. At least now she comes home.

I would like to teach my dog to stay. Whenever I try and pick her up, she runs around the house. It’s exhausting.

I would love to teach my dogs to listen when I tell them it is time to come inside. The weather is colder and my bulldogs love that, so they will stay outside for an hour or so and I stay outside with them. So cold!

I would teach my dog to fetch me my pops out of the fridge, but that might be a stretch. I would love it if my dogs would stop jumping on visitors.

I’d love to teach my dog to actually listen to stop and down. Because she has a lot of love and wants to greet everyone with a kiss and by jumping on them.
